BCCode Error

An Overview of BCCodes

BCCodes is the shortened version of ‘Bug Check Codes’ which is the term that the engineers at Microsoft came up with describe a situation where your machine had just suffered a critical error, and is about to shut down because of it.

Not entirely surprisingly, seeing a BCCode error message is not a good thing, as it generally suggests that the problem that has occurred is a serious one. Quote commonly, you will get another clue that what has just happened is not good news as BCCodes are often followed or accompanied by the ‘Blue Screen of Death’ which will in all probability list the BCCode error message.

BCCode Problems

If BCCode errors can be said to have anything good about them - and that is surely highly debatable - it is the fact that you are left in no doubt that a problem had occurred, because your machine will almost certainly shut itself down!

On the other hand, it may even go one stage further by closing down and then immediately restarting itself, settling into a seemingly interminable loop of opening and then shutting down again.

There are several reasons that BCCode errors can occur.

Some programs especially ‘protective software’ like firewalls and anti-virus software can often conflict with other programs on your PC and as a result, a BCCode error is generated.

If therefore you begin to suffer BCCode errors after installing new software (of any type, really) then that would be the first possible culprit to investigate. Try turning off the new software completely if possible and see if that makes any difference.

BCCode errors are also commonly associated with defective multi-media and gaming software as well, mainly because such programs are heavy users of both processing power and memory.

Again, try turning them off or disabling any such programs to see whether this has the desired effect.

Other than this, a BCCode error is often indicative of a hardware problem of some type, ranging from an incorrect power supply to a failing internal component like the motherboard or CPU.

Isolating and fixing BCCode errors

As always, whenever you encounter any kind of PC problem, especially something as potentially serious as a BCCode error, the first thing to do is to try not panic!

Begin by checking the simplest things before moving on to looking for more difficult answers to your questions.

So, check that you are using the proper power supply (especially is you are using a laptop overseas, for example). If you are not doing so, then you have in all probability found the source of your BCCode problem right there.

Perhaps you cannot get your machine to boot up properly, and the operating system simply refuses to start? Try starting it again but hold down the F8 key whilst doing so and see if it will start in ‘safe mode’ or whether you can action the ‘last known good configuration’ prompt.

You may need to hit the F12 key to access the ‘boot’ menu and from there try to start your machine from any recovery disk that you have or from the original operating system CDs.

Running both virus scans and spyware checks would be a good idea once you have managed to get Windows to start.

Basically, whatever checks you can run, do it now!

For example, it would probably be a very good time to run a thorough check of the registry of your PC, and a BCCode error could well be caused by some deep rooted registry problem of a kind that it is going to be very difficult to find without running a proper scan.

If you have the necessary software to do this, then use it now. If not, then you should at least avail yourself of a free online scan using a proprietary software program like SpeedyPC.

This would at least tell you whether the problem that is causing your BCCode error is something in your registry, and thereby point you in the right direction towards finding a solution.
